Tottenham are well-placed to complete the signing of Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso after agreeing a deal for his potential signature in the summer.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected at the club, explained that the deal for the midfielder is a win-win situation for the club.
This comes after Football Insider reported that Spurs secured a priority option to sign Cardoso for a fee of £21million in their deal to sell Giovani Lo Celso.
However, if they opt against triggering the clause and he is sold elsewhere, the club will take a percentage of any future transfer fee.
A United States international, the 23-year-old is highly thought of at Tottenham and there is a growing belief that he could add strength in depth to their midfield.
Cardoso has made 15 appearances for the Spanish outfit across all competitions this season and has established himself as a crucial player.
Following a man-of-the-match display in a 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid, Robinson has claimed the American’s value has now “doubled” since Spurs agreed their deal.

The nature of Spurs’ agreement over Cardoso’s future ensures they are set to benefit from his recent run of form regardless of their own intentions to bring him to North London.
Robinson, who spent four years at the club between 2004 and 2008, gave Daniel Levy plenty of credit for reaching the “incredible” agreement with Betis.
“They’re in a win-win situation at Tottenham,” he told Football Insider.
“You either get a top player in great form, who’s almost doubled his value over the last six months, or they get a share when he’s sold for a fortune.
“It’s very much a Daniel Levy deal. It’s incredible. They get first dibs on a player, and if he doesn’t sign for them, they get a percentage of his sale.
“He’s still only 23, got 17 caps for the USA and he’s got room to get better.
“He’s been playing very well for Betis this season and he’s clearly a good player.
“The Premier League is very different to La Liga with the pace of the game, but he’s definitely an option for them.
“There’s an abundance of talent in that Tottenham midfield, but he’s playing well and he’s put in a couple of man of the match performances.
“It’s an interesting one to keep an eye on, but does he start for Spurs? He’d be a good player for the squad but I’m not sure where he fits in.
“But the deal is one I don’t think we’ve ever seen before.”
