Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon has officially announced that he will be leaving the club by January, following a breakdown in contract negotiations over a potential salary increase. The Spanish left-back, who has been at Spurs since 2020, revealed that despite his efforts to secure a new deal with improved terms, the club has refused to sanction the wage rise he requested, leading to his decision to part ways in the coming months.
Reguilon’s Time at Tottenham
Sergio Reguilon joined Tottenham Hotspur from Real Madrid in September 2020 on a season-long loan, before the move was made permanent in 2021. Initially, the Spanish international impressed with his pace, attacking runs, and defensive contributions, quickly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising left-backs.
However, Reguilon’s time at Tottenham has been marked by inconsistencies, particularly with regard to his role within the squad. Under former manager Nuno EspĂrito Santo, Reguilon was a regular starter, but his place in the team became less certain under Antonio Conte, especially with the arrival of other players and the evolution of the club’s tactical approach.
Despite showing flashes of his potential, Reguilon’s playing time has fluctuated, and he spent a significant portion of the 2023/24 season out on loan at Atlético Madrid. However, Tottenham’s refusal to meet his salary demands has been a major point of contention. The club, under the stewardship of chairman Daniel Levy, has been operating with a firm stance on controlling player wages, in line with their broader financial strategy. Tottenham’s reluctance to offer Reguilon a significant wage increase has ultimately led to the breakdown in negotiations, with the defender now seeking a move away from North London.
