Newcastle drop Bruno Guimaraes price tag well below £100m amid Man City ‘desperation’

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes continues to be linked with a move to Manchester City.
It is common knowledge that Newcastle United are struggling to wrestle with the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

One way to navigate that would be for club chiefs to sanction a major sale – likely one of Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes.
Newcastle fought to keep hold of their three biggest stars over the summer with City considering Guimaraes’ £100m release clause. The Brazilian ended up staying put at St James’ Park and being handed the captain’s armband, but transfer speculation continues to rumble on.
With the January transfer window set to open next month, City could reignite their interest in Guimaraes, especially as they look to end their rotten run of form.

Newcastle United’s asking price for Bruno Guimaraes
In the summer, the situation was clear – City had to trigger Guimaraes’ full £100m release clause or walk away. They chose to walk away.
However, that release clause is no longer active, meaning Newcastle can dictate their own price.
Reports suggest Newcastle do not want to sell to City as they don’t want to lose a star player to a club “run by Emirati funds”. The geopolitical issues between both club’s ownership could come into play.
However, Newcastle need to raise funds and Pep Guardiola admires Guimaraes. Journalist Chris Waugh believes the asking price for Guimaraes has dropped well below the £100m he was valued at in the summer.
Via The Athletic, Waugh wrote: “Guimaraes is liked by Guardiola, has Premier League experience and operates as a No.6 (even if he has shifted to the No.8 role in recent games).
“With every defeat, Manchester City’s desperation to strengthen mid-season increases.
“But Newcastle would demand a significant fee for Guimaraes – probably not the £100m figure that was attached to the release clause he previously had in his deal, but potentially between £60m-£80m – and it would not be a straightforward deal for them to complete.”
Bruno Guimaraes’ stance on leaving Newcastle
Guimaraes has previously said that he feels like an “idol” at Newcastle, and most supporters would agree with that.
He has become a superstar at St James’ Park since his £40m move and represents the club superbly as captain.
However, there is no doubt that Guimaraes views himself as a Champions League-calibre player and a move to the reigning champions is bound to make him consider his future.
According to Sky Sports, City revived their talks with Guimaraes and his agents ahead of a potential move in 2025. They claim that Guimaraes has already given a “green light” to join City with personal terms not expected to be an issue.
Waugh argues that City haven’t made an official approach for Guimaraes, but things could move quickly if an offer does arrive.
