‘I would have to say’… Troy Deeney picks who will stay in the Premier League out of Leeds United and Burnley

With Leeds United and Burnley the only two confirmed teams heading into the Premier League, Troy Deeney has weighed in on who he thinks will stay up.

It was an incredible season from the Championship’s top two as Daniel Farke and Scott Parker should be proud of their efforts.

With Leeds prevailing though, Parker was frustrated goal difference decided the title, as Leeds’ 95 goals trumped Burnley’s defensive success.

But with both now promoted, a difficult challenge of the Premier League awaits both teams.

This has brought Troy Deeney to assess who he thinks could stay up, and it might raise eyebrows.

Troy Deeney on who stays up out of Leeds United and Burnley

Both sides will be set for an exciting summer as the ownerships are looking to pump a significant amount of money into their squads.

This has been made clear in the Leeds camp as Paraag Marathe wants to spend £100m, but the signings have to be spot on.

Leeds have shown they are clear of the Championship, but the top flight could give Farke a harsh reality.

This is what pundit Deeney thinks, as out of both clubs he has backed Burnley to stay up over Leeds due to one thing.

Speaking to Sky Sports (03/05/25), Deeney said: “What we’ve noticed with the teams that have gone up into the Premier League is they’ve struggled to keep clean sheets. Burnley, in my opinion, have the best foundation to go and be successful next year.

“Yes, they are going to have to add quality because we know the gap is getting bigger each year. But for where they are at right now, and if you ask me to put my money on who will stay up, I would have to say Burnley over Leeds because they can shut up shop and make sure that they are in games.

“Most of the games now, people are losing before they even get there.”

Leeds have shown they can defend better than Burnley

Despite the impressive 16 goals conceded, this shouldn’t put any shade on the Whites’ defence, which has been an integral part of the title-winning campaign

.Farke has shown he can manage both areas of defence and attack effectively this season, but even though Parker’s defence did superbly, Leeds actually come out on top with one statistic.

Leeds had a better expected goals against, and that factor has remained with the season coming to it’s end, and by a landslide.

So when it comes to ‘shutting up shop’ the Whites are actually better, and if you think about the amount of shots both sides will face next season, Leeds should be superior.

Parker’s side might hold out defensively in the second tier, but in the Premier League, it’s a whole different ball game.
