Manchester United’s woes under Ruben Amorim continued on Sunday afternoon as they were beaten by Manchester City.
Phil Foden gave City an early lead and Erling Haaland’s second half brace ensured City took all three points.
Ruben Amorim Vows Not to Change His Tactics
Amorim had great success playing with a 3-4-3 formation at Sporting CP. However, he has not had the same success playing that formation at Man Utd.
United have now lost 16 of their 31 Premier League matches since Amorim was appointed in November 2024. Despite that dismal record, Amorim has vowed not to change his philosophy on numerous occasions. He stated his intentions to persist with his tactics yet again after the defeat to Man City, comments which have angered United fans. He said, per ESPN:
“I won’t change my philosophy. If they [United hierarchy] want it changed, you change the man. I am not going to change my philosophy. I will play my way until I want to change.
“Guys, I understand [the questions] and I accept it is not a record you should have at Man United. But there are a lot of things that you have no idea about what happen in the last months.
“I understand everything. It is normal [if fans are losing faith], but I don’t accept that we are not doing better. We are doing better and the results don’t show that, the record says everything, I understand. My message is I will do everything. I will give everything. It is not my decision, the rest. I will do my best. I am suffering more than [the fans].”
Jose Mourinho’s Comments Re-Emerge
Comments made by Jose Mourinho have re-emerged and gone viral after Amorim vowed to not change his tactics. In the summer, Mourinho hit out at managers that are stubborn and continue with their ideology despite poor results.
“Today, there’s no such thing as a single game model,” he said, per the Mirror. “There are many ways to play. There’s no longer a tactical system, there are many ways to build and defend.
“This means training in a much more tactical way, where players must grow and acquire new knowledge. The problem is wanting to copy and paste without the necessary conditions to do so.
“Playing from the back with a wooden goalkeeper is complicated. I remember Guardiola had Hart, the best English goalkeeper. But he wanted Claudio Bravo, but that wasn’t enough. So he signed Ederson.
“There are coaches who try things that don’t work and fail, but they say, ‘I died with my idea.’ If you die with your idea, you’re stupid. Coaches have to adapt their ideas to what they have.”
He added: “Today coaches whose names I don’t even know go to the Premier League, and I don’t say that without respect, it’s true.
“Some coaches are chosen by dates, numbers, not by victories. Perceptions are created, and today the idea is sold that, more important than winning, is playing like this, looking like this… at that level, things have changed radically.”
