Matheus Cunha Claims Only One Teammate at Wolves Really Wanted Him to Stay, Despite Being the Club’s Best Player

In a surprisingly candid interview, Matheus Cunha has revealed that despite being widely regarded as Wolves’ best player last season, only one of his teammates explicitly told him they wanted him to remain at the club when transfer speculation intensified. Every other player, he says, treated his potential departure as something almost inevitable — except for one.

Cunha, who scored consistently and carried much of the attacking burden for Wolves, said that while offers and rumours swirled, there was one teammate whose belief in him staying stood out. That player was Hwang Hee-chan, the South Korean forward.

“When everyone else was being practical, talking about offers, or what was best for me financially or career-wise, it felt like most accepted that I might go,” Cunha said. “But Hwang came to me after training one day, just looked me in the face and said, ‘Matheus, Wolves need you. We play better with you here — not only because you score, but because you lift everyone.’ That meant something. Hwang was the only one who didn’t talk about the exit; he spoke about building together. It made me pause and think — maybe staying could be more than just about the next move.”

According to Cunha, Hwang’s words were among the few points of clarity amid the uncertainty. While other players sympathised, or offered kind words, it was Hwang’s firm belief that made Cunha feel valued beyond just his goals — as a leader and a teammate.

Cunha added that this kind of support, even from just one person, made a real difference in how he looked at Wolves’ future.

“I’ve always felt proud to wear the shirt. But hearing from someone you respect, someone who fights alongside you every match, that you belong here — that changes how you feel. I don’t know where things will go, but I’ll always appreciate that moment. It made Wolves feel more than a stepping-stone.”
