Tottenham Hotspur’s season is not exactly going to plan when it comes to the Premier League, but Ange Postecoglou’s side are top of the pile in a very interesting statistic.
Tottenham Hotspur are giving no space away
When you think about Ange Postecoglou’s style of football, the idea of a high intensity press is probably one of the first things that come to mind.
We see it from the front to the back, with Dominic Solanke leading the charge in attack, hard-working midfielders like Dejan Kulusevski and Yves Bissouma controlling the middle of the park, and that infamous high line in defence, too.
But, while results haven’t always gone Tottenham’s way, data from Hudl Statsbomb on Twitter/X reveals Spurs are the best in the league when it comes to denying their opponents space.
Judging by the graphics used to display the data, Spurs are only giving a small amount of space in the right full-back area. The rest of the pitch, it appears Tottenham are suffocating their opponent and not giving them an inch to play in.

Only Bournemouth come close to the kind of pressure Spurs are putting on their opponents. Meanwhile it would appear Wolves, Southampton, and Ipswich Town, three teams occupying the bottom four places in the league, are the teams offering up the most space for their opponents.
What is going wrong for Tottenham, then?
So, with all this pressure and the way Tottenham are limiting the teams they play, why are the Lilywhites sitting in tenth place in the Premier League table?
The truth is, Spurs are not all that far away from the top four right now, and if it weren’t for some shoddy defending and a lack of composure in front of goal at times, results would have gone their way.
It would appear, based on pretty much every bit of data and statistical analysis, that Postecoglou’s system and style of play should work, and in time, it will hopefully become more consistently successful.
