TOTTENHAM CONFIRMS STAR WILL BE OUT FOR 3-4WEEKS FOLLOWING INJURY AFTER LIMPING OFF THE PITCH LAST SATURDAY.
Tottenham went to the Etihad and destroyed Manchester City 4-0, but they have now been handed some worrying injury news.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou would have been disappointed, and perhaps upset, that his goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario played on for more than 60 minutes after suffering an ankle injury against Manchester City, which likely aggravated what is now a significant blow.
The club confirmed in a statement that their first-choice goalkeeper underwent surgery on Monday evening, but stopped short of specifying how long he would be out for. What is certain, however, is that he will miss the next two games, the Europa League fixture against AS Roma and the Premier League match against AFC Bournemouth at the weekend.
A statement from the club read: “We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario has today undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle. Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training. We’re all behind you, Vic.”
Why it will upset Postecoglou
The Italian goalkeeper sustained the injury in the first half after a collision with Manchester City’s Savinho, but he continued playing and was seen limping at halftime without coming off. He stayed on the pitch, possibly doing further damage, which means he will now miss the busy festive fixture period that Tottenham struggled with last season.
Vicario later confirmed on social media that he played for almost 60 minutes with a broken ankle, which now required surgery. Some fans see him as a hero for playing through the pain, but given that he will miss crucial matches, it is understandable that the injury will worry Postecoglou.
Spurs have been inconsistent this season. They have been very strong against the top teams, as shown in their recent win against Manchester City, as well as their victories over Manchester United and Aston Villa. However, they have also been disappointing against what some would consider “smaller” teams, with losses to Crystal Palace and Ipswich.
The growing injury list is also a major concern for Postecoglou, with Richarlison, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero all currently sidelined.
Tottenham have scored more goals than any other team in the Premier League, yet they sit in sixth place on the league table. When they are good, they are very good, but consistency remains a challenge.
