Former Tottenham star opens up on ‘strange things’ behind the scenes at Spurs leading to his exit
Giovani Lo Celso says that he was not treated well at Tottenham and explains he had to deal with some ‘strange’ decisions from the club.
Since returning to Betis in the summer, Lo Celso has got regular minutes under his belt and his quality has shone through, with the attacking midfielder having found the back of the net seven times across all competitions so far this season.
This is a version of Lo Celso that Spurs fans never got to see for a sustained period, and many were often left scratching their heads as to why the player they saw in a Tottenham shirt was nothing like the one they did when he played for his national side.
While injuries did not help the Argentina international’s cause, he has now hinted that he was not fairly treated.
Lo Celso reveals mixed communication during his time at Spurs
Lo Celso has five different managers over the course of his five-year spell at Tottenham, during which he was loaned out on two separate occasions to Villarreal. The midfielder has now claimed that on a few occasions, the Premier League side did not follow through on what they said.
Reflecting on his time at Spurs, Lo Celso told The Times: “There were some very strange things. They always told me one thing in the club and then something else happened on the pitch. But whatever, I don’t want to go into detail about what happened, but the way they handled things was very strange.
“Many times, at the time of transfer decisions, the club said that they were going to count on me, that they wanted me not to leave. And then it happened anyway, the complete opposite.”
Lo Celso explains last season’s frustrations
The 28-year-old admitted that he was initially told in the summer of 2023 that he was allowed to leave, only for the club to change their mind later in the transfer window. The Tottenham man hinted at his frustration at not having opportunities to show what he could do under Ange Postecoglou.
When asked about the solitary season he spent under the Australian, the Betis man said: “I thought it would be a new start because at the time when the market closed, I had options to leave, to go to other teams.
“First, the club had communicated to me that they wanted me to leave, then they told me that they wanted me to stay and when it was my turn to play, I tried to do it in the best way. In fact, I had the chance to score a couple of goals in the games I played, but then that was it, after that nothing more.
“It was all a bit weird because I played when it was my turn to play and I think I did it well. And then after that, from one day to the next, I didn’t have a clue what was going on. It all became a bit of an uphill struggle.”
