Well established in the pantheon of Manchester United’s greatest players ever, the Liverpool native took advantage of the 13 years he spent there to establish himself as the club’s all-time top goalscorer (253 goals in 559 appearances). It’s a prestigious record, not to mention the numerous trophies he helped to win ,including the Premier League and Champions League. In short, an exceptional football player.
And while some observers now place him at the top of their ranking of the best English footballers of all time, Rooney does not consider himself to be the best to represent the Three Lions. And he even has a very specific idea of who could hold to this honorary distinction.

Invited by The Overlap podcast in 2024, the former Red Devil named Harry Kane as the greatest English player of all time. His comments were full of praise for his former England team-mate, and even surprised the show’s presenter, Gary Neville.
I think he’s incredible. The goals he scored, assists… Now he’s added over the last few years as well. For me, I’d probably say he’s England’s greatest ever player […] With Harry, there’s never an issue. You see that he’s ultra-professional and never misses a game.
And whether or not you agree with Rooney, you will find it difficult to question the professionalism and the level reached by the England captain. A truly complete centre-forward, Kane left his mark on the history of both the Premier League, where he is the second-highest scorer in history, and Tottenham Hotspur, where no-one has scored more goals (280 in 435 games) than him in over 140 years of existence.

At Bayern Munich, where he has now been playing for almost two years, the serial goalscorer has not taken long to win over his new fans either, with almost supernatural statistics. A brilliant career, then, which has so far been marred only by a lack of trophies. But 2025 could well prove to be the right year for the British striker.
