While such emphatic results might mask the mediocrity of their domestic campaigns, preparations are already underway for a potential all-English final on May 21. And early forecasts suggest United fans may have more cause for optimism than their north London counterparts.

According to BBC Sport, Spurs proposed a Thursday fixture, which would have given them more rest than United, but Villa – fresh from European elimination themselves – chose to prioritise a more manageable domestic run-in in pursuit of a top-five finish.

That said, with little left to play for in the league, both clubs are likely to rotate heavily in their final domestic games to keep their best players fresh for the May 21 showdown in Bilbao, and so any complaints that one team is much better off than the other would seem academic.
