Alejandro Garnacho’s brother’s Instagram post has caused a big stir after Manchester United missed out on Champions League qualification on Wednesday night, following a 1-0 defeat to Premier League rivals Tottenham in the Europa League final. The result means Ruben Amorim’s side will now be without any form of European football next season for the first time since 2014.
Luke Shaw’s own goal in the first half proved to be the decisive moment. Despite United dominating much of the second half in a relentless attack-vs-defence scenario – as the Red Devils pinned Ange Postecoglou’s side deep into their own third – no United player could find the key to unlock Spurs’ stubborn setup.
One of Amorim’s biggest mistakes at Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium was his reluctance to make substitutions earlier in the match. Five players were left warming up for over 20 minutes before finally being called upon, with Garnacho being the first to come on in the 71st minute, alongside Joshua Zirkzee. It’s a decision that hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Garnacho’s brother throwing shade on social media, adding to the post-match fallout.

His agent clearly wasn’t happy with his bit-part role on Wednesday night
It took barely a minute after coming off the bench for Garnacho, 20, to ruffle the feathers of the Tottenham defence. The Argentine youngster sized up Pedro Porro before cutting inside and getting a shot off, more than some of his teammates – such as Rasmus Hojlund – achieved all night.
But after having been given just 19 minutes of regular time to stamp his authority on proceedings, neither he nor his brother, who is also his agent, were happy about it. Posting on Instagram at full-time, Roberto wrote (see the post below):
“Working as no one else, helping every round, coming from two goals last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus. Wow, hahahaha.”
The “thrown under the bus” comment is likely referring to Amorim’s post-match interview where he responds to a question about whether he should have started Garnacho over Mason Mount with: “It’s easy to say that now. Who missed the big opportunity in the first half in the semi-final? Garnacho. Football is like that”. See below:
Garnacho Addresses Amorim’s Decision Not To Start Him
The transfer rumour mill has been spun again by the 20-year-old
Garnacho has directly contributed to 21 goals in 58 games across all competitions this season, and in an interview with a Spanish-speaking outlet, he too wasn’t prepared to let Amorim’s lack of trust in starting him slide. He said (see his interview below):
“The season was crap, we didn’t beat anyone in the league, truly. Until I reached the final, I played every round and helped the team, and to play 20 minutes today… I don’t know. I’ll enjoy the summer, and then we’ll see.”
His comments hint at a possible summer move for the 20-year-old – a switch that could see him thrive away from Old Trafford, following a trend seen with the likes of Scott McTominay, Antony, and Marcus Rashford, with Matheus Cunha expected to come through the revolving doors in his place.
