Alejandro Garnacho Hails Tottenham Ace as ‘Best in the World’ After Europa League Final

Ruben Amorim and Manchester United fell at the final hurdle, losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, as they attempted to salvage silverware from an otherwise dismal season and Alejandro Garnacho, in his post-match interview, hailed a Spurs star as ‘the best in the world’.

The winger, still just 20 years of age, entered the fray in the 71st minute in favour of Mason Mount – but he was unable to inspire the Red Devils to victory as Spurs’ backs-to-the-wall approach worked perfectly. Manchester United ran out of ideas.

But Garnacho, staying humble in his post-match interview, suggested that his compatriot Cristian Romero is the best centre-back in world football and that he deserves his flowers. Per The Metro, the Carrington graduate said:

“We know Cuti [Cristian Romero], he’s the best centre-back in the world. He deserves it, so congratulations to him.”

Romero, 27, played the entirety of Spurs’ nervy 1-0 win over Manchester United at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao – and, in his 90-minute display, he chalked up 10 clearances, a 92% pass accuracy and, as expected, he won the majority of his duels.

Rasmus Hojlund was no physical match for the Argentina international – who was permanently signed from Atalanta in the summer of 2022 – and Garnacho, as mentioned, was quick to come out and praise his fellow countryman.

After sharing digs from minute one to 90, Romero was front and centre of a bust-up with Harry Maguire at the full-time whistle. As tensions boiled over, Maguire shouted: “You’re the captain, come on!” at the Spurs man, who remained on the ground after clashing with the aforementioned Hojlund.

According to reports, the north Londoners are ‘likely’ to lose Romero in the summer by virtue of the ever-growing interest in his signature. Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, who are currently third in La Liga, are viewed as would-be buyers.

Amid speculation over his future in the English capital, he admitted last month that he is keen to play in Spain’s top flight before hanging up his boots. “LaLiga is the one [league] left to play in. I would love to, to tell you the truth,” he told TyC Sports. “I would love to play there because it’s the league I’m missing.”
