Alan Hutton believes Micky van de Ven’s return could be huge news for Tottenham Hotspur this season but has urged Spurs to not rush the Dutchman back into action.
The 22-year-old returned to Ange Postecoglou’s matchday squad for the FA Cup third-round clash with Burnley having not played for Spurs since sustaining a hamstring injury during the chaotic 4-1 defeat to Chelsea back in November.
While Van de Ven remained on the bench for the entirety of Tottenham’s 1-0 win, some have suggested he could be ready to start the Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday 14 January having had an extra week of training.
Postecoglou is short of options at the heart of the defence with Eric Dier completing his transfer to Bayern Munich, but Hutton has told the Spurs boss to remain cautious suggesting it would be best to not throw him into the deep end at Old Trafford.
“It’s huge, I thought he was outstanding,” Hutton told
“He and Romero played really well together, they had that pace to get back in and I can understand why they’re not just throwing him back in because, with a hamstring injury and how he did it running at full pace, you don’t want to take the risk.
“Of course, he’s done the training and the strength work and everything, but there’s no need to just throw him.
“They’ll probably just look at his minutes and take it just week by week and see how he goes to get him back 100 per cent fit and raring to go for the second half of the season.”
Van de Ven has played 11 times in the Premier League for Tottenham this season, keeping four clean sheets and even popping up with a goal. His impressive form at the heart of Spurs’ defence played a huge part in their excellent start to the season [Fotmob].
While it remains to be seen whether or not Postecoglou will opt to start the Dutchman against Erik ten Hag’s side on Sunday, it is still a huge boost to Spurs that they can call upon the “outstanding” defender once again.
