“I think it’s fascinating [Villa’s recent form]. Looking at this fixture and trying to predict a winner, it could have been anything. I take the home form not being as strong as it was earlier in the season when they were on that incredible run,” he said.
“Villa still had opportunities that they didn’t take and Spurs were pretty ruthless. They smothered Aston Villa. The centre-halves dealt with Watkins and Bailey, and then McGinn just lost his head, which had a fair bearing on the game.”
On Villa’s future aspirations, Sutton doesn’t anticipate the wheels falling off any time soon.
“I don’t think you can look at this game in isolation and think the wheels are going to fall off,” he added.
“It’s a sore one, but they’re still in a pretty good position.”
