Tottenham Hotspur returned to fourth place in the Premier League table on Sunday after a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest.
On paper, it probably seemed relatively easy for Ange Postecoglou’s side, but it was far from that.
Once again, Spurs failed to keep a clean sheet and they were probably lucky they weren’t behind at the break.
An own goal put the home side ahead early in the first half, before Chris Wood equalised and then proceeded to miss a sitter at the near post.
Given the ultra-attacking nature in which Tottenham bomb forward, if you can get in behind them, then you will get a lot of joy and produce chances galore.
Nemanja Vidic was critical of Spurs’ backline, especially Destiny Udogie, for how they attempted to protect their goal for that Wood equaliser, as he told Premier League Productions (07/04/24 at 6:55 pm).
Given the freedom provided to the Italy international, and how his manager wants him to play like a number ten, then there will be a lot of open spaces behind him.
But Vidic was critical of Tottenham’s entire backline – Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Udogie – for their positioning and how they need to communicate during these moments.
Tottenham’s defending against Nottingham Forest
“I think he (Udogie) should hold the line,” said Vidic. “He is too far to press the ball.
“Then he puts, in a difficult position, the defender and the other defender as well. I think Werner should be with the player on the ball and hold that run. Don’t leave big spaces for the other three defenders to defend.
‘I think the positioning of the four players at the back wasn’t good enough and sometimes, by talking, you can solve this situation. I think any central defender should tell him ‘hold your run. Stay and you are not ready to press’.”

The rough comes with the smooth. Spurs are being royally entertained here and the fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
Yes, they are probably lucky on occasions, conceding too many chances and it is costly, at times.
But, at the end of the day, they are sat in fourth, level on points with Aston Villa and with a game in hand.
After losing Harry Kane in the summer, if Spurs manage to make a return to the Champions League and do it in style, then it’s some achievement from their manager.
