England given surprise new FIFA world ranking after Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain
The latest FIFA world rankings have been released, with England seeing some movement in their position.
England have been handed a surprise new FIFA world ranking following on from Euro 2024.
The latest batch of rankings have been released by the world football governing body after the conclusion of both the Euros and Copa America tournaments.
Argentina retained their title as kings of South America after an extra time win over Colombia in the final at the Hard Rock Stadium and therefore remain at the very summit.
France stay put in second but Spain, who beat them in the semi finals before seeing off England in Berlin, climb five places up to third after a fourth Euros triumph.
A second Euros final on the trot for England, albeit with the same disappointing result, sees them move one place up to fourth – swapping places with Brazil after they were eliminated from the Copa America at the quarter final stage.
The biggest winners from the new rankings are Venezuela, who have gone up a whopping 17 places from 37th after an impressive Copa America campaign.
Turkey have also received recognition for their excellent showing at Euro 2024, climbing 16 places to 26th.
Belgium and Croatia have both each dropped three places, with Portugal down two and the United States national team falling down five positions after an underwhelming host tournament which led to Gregg Berhalter’s dismissal.
Switzerland’s impressive tournament has resulted in an increase of four but it is Czech Republic who have experienced the biggest drop, sinking 13 places to 47th.
Scotland, meanwhile, have plummeted nine places to end up in 48th after failing to get out of the groups in Germany.
