Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Lille striker Jonathan David, and the reports suggested that the Canadian ace could be available on a cheap deal.
However, per the latest by L’Equipe (as relayed by Sky Sports), the French side have no intention of selling the player on the cheap this summer.Many assumed that the 24-year-old would conclude the summer as one of the bargain transfers as he only has one year remaining on his current contract at Lille and does not appear in line to pen down a new one.Multiple reports along the last month have indicated that the Lilywhites are leading the race to sign the Canadian international. Daniel Levy & Co. were looking to snap his signatures for a possible £25m fee, per Football Insider.
However, per the latest reports, the Ligue 1 side does not appear to entertain such vague fees.
L’Equipe have acknowledged that David is in the final year of his contract while insisting that his current employers are demanding €50m (£42.4m) to let their star man leave. That’s almost a similar kind of fee that Brentford are asking for Toney, whose contract also ends in a year.
The report suggests that the hefty price has not put off his potential suitors, with multiple Premier League sides having expressed interest in snapping his signatures.
The newspaper also adds that Atletico Madrid is currently closely monitoring the player.
The rumours linking the North Londoners to the 24-year-old have subsided over the past week or so, and it could be well attributed to the availability of alternatives at Lille’s asking price. Spurs could now turn their attention to the likes of Dominic Solanke and Ivan Toney, both of whom come with the bonus of being homegrown players.
