Newcastle United were agonisingly close to the FFP/PSR limit on June 30

 

Former Everton and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness believes Newcastle United “will be thinking” about player sales to comply with FFP/PSR regulations.

 

A frantic deadline saw the Magpies come agonisingly close to breaching the £105million over three-year limit. Toon chiefs scrambled over the line by selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson on June 30.

 

Dan Ashworth’s move to Manchester United was also agreed to give Newcastle headroom. Little transfer activity has frustrated supporters, with today’s announcement of William Osula the marquee arrival so far.

 

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is rumoured to be on United’s radar and, should he arrive, that would likely cost a club-record fee. The Telegraph suggested earlier this week the 24-year-old may arrive before the Sela Weekender – which now looks unlikely.

 

Ex-Toffees chief Wyness has suggested a big-money move could force Newcastle into another scramble next summer. He told Football Insider: “They’ll be ok for last season’s books. But for PSR, they may already be thinking about sales for next year which will balance the books after they sign Guehi.

 

“That could be in the January window or at the end of this season. Guehi would be a great acquisition for them, he’d fit very well into Eddie Howe’s team. I think they’re ok for the PSR numbers at the moment, but they’ll have to think about who they may sell to cover this big-money incoming.

 

“That’s how I think they’re looking at it. If they get Guehi, they’ll be happy because he improves their squad.”
