Marc Guehi would be a ‘statement signing’ for Newcastle United
There has been unsurprising radio silence from Crystal Palace as far as Marc Guehi’s future is concerned but one lucky fan got the chance to ask the defender about his immediate future during a chance encounter on Friday.
“Marc, are you staying?” was the question put to the Newcastle United target in footage shared on social media, with Guehi turning his head before offering a shrug of the shoulders in a move that will do little to reassure worried Palace supporters. The Chelsea academy graduate has been back in training with the club since Wednesday after being given an extended break following his summer exploits with England.
Newcastle saw their second bid for Guehi rejected by Palace earlier this week. The Magpies are desperate to land the defender before the month is out but have so far been unwilling to meet the lofty demand of £65m.
Chronicle Live reported on Friday that the Magpies were looking to get Guehi’s price tag lowered given he has just two years left on his deal at Selhurst Park and has, so far, shown no willingness to extend into the future. Toon sporting chief Paul Mitchell remains involved with negotiations, with Newcastle poised to return with an improved offer.
Newcastle’s 4-0 win over Girona, Eddie Howe told reporters: “The transfer window is picking up now. We are hoping to add at least one player to the group. But it has to be about quality rather than quantity.”
Howe opted for a partnership of Emil Krafth and Dan Burn during Friday’s comfortable victory over their Spanish opposition, while Fabian Schar and Lloyd Kelly are expected to feature in Saturday’s clash with French side Brest.
Meanwhile, Palace are in talks with Maxence Lacroix, who has just one year left on his deal at Wolfsburg. A successful swoop for the 24-year-old will likely hand Newcastle a significant boost in their pursuit of Guehi.
