The scenes could not have been more different at the Vitality. It was in this very stadium that Kieran Trippier clashed with a disgruntled Newcastle United fan last year and asked: “Were the lads not giving everything?” In contrast, on Sunday, the England international received overwhelming support following the Magpies’ 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.

As the away end repeatedly chanted ‘Kieran Trippier – over the wall!’, various staff members threw an arm around the 33-year-old. Eddie Howe even had a quiet word and embraced Trippier for a few seconds.

However, rather than walking off the pitch behind them, Trippier instead followed the lead of the bare-chested Bruno Guimaraes and approached the away end. Bruno, wearing the captain’s armband, repeatedly pointed to his team-mate, almost urging the fans to keep serenading the defender, but there was no danger of Geordies stopping.

Trippier threw his shirt into the crowd and applauded the supporters back. The veteran was the last man off the field and cut an emotional figure as he put his hand over his eyes at one point on the way back to the dressing room.

Sunday’s second-half cameo served as a timely reminder of why Howe does not want to lose Trippier, amid interest from Everton, Atalanta and Galatasaray, and the right-back’s future is one of a number of subplots in what even the players have called a ‘big week’ for Newcastle. In fact, as strange as it sounds, it already feels like a massive few days for the club on and off the field.

There is Sandro Tonali’s return and Wednesday’s trip to Nottingham Forest, which was one of the most difficult draws Newcastle could have landed at this stage of the Carabao Cup, before the transfer window shuts just a couple of days later. Then there is the small matter of a clash against Spurs on Sunday that will be a real test of Newcastle’s top-four credentials – even in the opening weeks of the campaign. On this evidence, Newcastle are still short of the ‘difference maker’ that Howe desperately wants and Crystal Palace could drop a big hint on the status of the Marc Guehi deal if the England international ends up being cup-tied against Norwich City on Tuesday.

Regardless of whether Guehi or an alternative arrives, how the current group fare against Nottingham Forest and Spurs will determine how this point at the Vitality will be judged. In truth, this was an afternoon where Newcastle just so easily could have gone home with nothing after Dango Ouattara had a goal disallowed by VAR in stoppage time to leave Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola furious.

You could not help but cast your mind back to another trip to the South Coast two years ago when Newcastle were relieved to share the spoils with Brighton following the Magpies’ second game of the campaign. That proved a point gained come the end of the season after Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.

That is the stage Newcastle want to get back to and the Magpies will need the resilience and character they have shown to rally with 10 men to beat Southampton and to come from behind to draw level against Bournemouth when they were far from their very best. They will also need to offer a lot more over the course of 90 minutes moving forward.

You see, after making a decent start on Sunday, which was all the more striking given Newcastle’s issues on the road last season, the black-and-whites inexplicably dropped off. Passive Newcastle were indebted to Nick Pope’s knee for denying Evanilson a goal on his debut before Antoine Semenyo struck the crossbar with a long-range effort midway through the first half.

Semenyo skipped inside Joelinton to create that opening and, in the 37th minute, the impressive Bournemouth forward dispossessed the Brazilian with ease. Semenyo drifted away from Dan Burn and Lloyd Kelly and squeezed the ball across for Marcus Tavernier to tap home. You can’t say it had not been coming.

Howe resisted making any changes at the break, and those who lined up from the off were given a chance to make amends, but it was Bournemouth who looked the likelier scorers and Evanilson came mighty close to turning Semenyo’s cross into the net. Howe had seen enough.

Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes were the first substitutes to enter the fray, followed by Lewis Hall and Joe Willock, and the changes belatedly sparked the visitors into life. It was Hall who teed up Alexander Isak for a header that was cleared off the line in the 70th minute before Barnes created an opening for Joelinton that Neto got a strong hand to.

The pendulum was swinging Newcastle’s way and the visitors soon equalised. Barnes cut inside Julian Araujo down the left and clipped the ball to the back post. There was Anthony Gordon to connect on the half volley and draw Newcastle level to set up a grandstand finish.

It was anyone’s game from that point. Alex Scott’s well-struck piledriver whistled past the post. Dan Burn had a header clawed away by Neto. Dango Ouattara thought he had won it after getting on the end of Lewis Cook’s corner. However, VAR intervened and disallowed the goal for handball.

There was still time for Joelinton to escape a red card for a clothesline on Neto at the death before referee David Coote finally blew up. Much to Newcastle’s relief.
