Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero played an important part for Argentina as they romped to a 3-0 win against Chile in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala spearheaded Lionel Scaloni’s side to all three points, with Romero starting at the heart of the backline.
He has played each of Tottenham’s three Premier League games so far and was chosen to start in a back-three alongside Nicolas Otamendi and Lisandro Martinez.
Romero did his reputation no harm with another assured display and a clean sheet, earning rave reviews for his performances.
Romero played the full 90 minutes and was at his imperious best as Argentina continue to establish themselves as one of the most difficult teams to beat in world football.
TYC Sport described Romero as a ‘beast’ and went on to indicate that he is up there with the best players in the world in his position.
“He’s a beast. He doesn’t miss a single one. There’s no better centre-back in the world than Cuti these days,” was their verdict of the Tottenham star as he earned a rating of seven out of ten.
Argentina U-20s manager Javier Mascherano described Romero as a player with no ceiling ahead of the Olympics.
With the defender performing the way he has for club and country, Mascherano could well have a point.
Analysing Romero’s stats against Chile
Romero earned a Sofascore rating of 7.3 and hardly put a foot wrong as Chile barely had a sniff in the final third.
He won four of the seven aerial duels he contested and completed one dribble, winning one foul in the process. Romero didn’t block any shorts, which is another indication that the Chile attackers weren’t at their potent best.
The 26-year-old boasted a pass percentage of 89% (59/66 passes completed) and had 82 touches of the ball – a stat that shows how involved he was in the game.
Ange Postecoglou praised Romero for his commitment earlier this season, with the Argentine defender an indispensable cog of his backline.
However, with Real Madrid. keeping tabs on Romero, Tottenham need to do everything they can to retain his services as he continues to enhance his reputation for club and country.
