Newcastle United fans were left stunned by Anthony Gordon’s performance as England beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 at the Aviva Stadium.
The winger was a constant threat for Lee Carsley’s side throughout, with his runs in behind and relentless pressing causing plenty of issues for the hosts.
He was also unlucky not to find himself on the scoresheet when played through by Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold – although his miss led to Declan Rice’s opening goal.
After his display, many supporters have slammed Gareth Southgate’s decision to use Gordon just once at Euro 2024 in a cameo from the bench during the group stage.
The Newcastle winger has shown exactly why he deserves to start for his country, and the impact he can make when he features from the start.
Phil Foden’s withdrawal from the squad due to injury issues provided Gordon with the opportunity, and he grabbed it with both hands.

Carsley’s first game as England boss showed fans a glimpse at the style of play they can expect under his guidance should he be given the job on a full-time basis.
Gordon’s role in that side was also made apparent, with his performance reminding supporters that he can be a vital part of the England setup.
After a slow start to the season with Newcastle, there had been questions about his commitment, but his return to action for England showed what they have been missing.
Fans have flooded to social media in response to his display, labelling him “amazing” and “incredible” while questioning Southgate’s previous decisions.
