It was well-known that the Londoners were going to be busy in the market but it was unlikely that anyone expected them to have been as active as they were.
While the new arrivals will help bolster their ranks and improve their chances of European football, their spending spree won’t come without consequences.
The Hammers have spent a fair amount of money this summer and although players were sold to help fund new arrivals, this hasn’t stopped the West Ham hierarchy from being in “fear” of what’s to come in the accounts.
Sean Whetstone reported via X (9 September) that the Hammers could be in line to make some “tough decisions” next season because of their spending spree although nothing needs to be decided yet as there are “variables” that need to be taken into consideration first.
Although no names were mentioned within the update, it included a picture of Mohammed Kudus who is one of the best players and assets.
Plenty of moves were mooted for the Ghanaian during the summer but after his release clause expired, his fee was deemed too high for clubs to show an interest [The Athletic, 28 June].
Jarrod Bowen is another player who could’ve exited this summer with Newcastle vying for his transfer throughout the window [i News, 5 August].
After being made West Ham’s captain, however, it feels like his future is at the London Stadium for a few years to come, that is, unless the Hammers become desperate.
Only time will tell whether their 2024/25 rebuild will come back to bite them in the future.
