Piers Morgan has made headlines with a daring declaration about Arsenal’s defensive capabilities ahead of the North London derby, but his comments may have underestimated Tottenham Hotspur’s potential impact on the game.

Morgan, a well-known journalist and TV personality, recently stated that Arsenal possesses the best defence and goalkeeper in world football. He expressed confidence that Arsenal’s defensive line would be impenetrable, even suggesting that Tottenham would struggle to score against them in their upcoming clash. This bold statement from Morgan seems to downplay the threat that Spurs can pose.

Despite Arsenal entering the derby as favourites, recent developments could level the playing field. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly facing significant injury problems, with up to seven senior players potentially sidelined for the match. Key players such as Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard may miss out, creating gaps in both the midfield and the defence.

Morgan’s assertion that Arsenal’s backline is the best in the world might seem premature given the current circumstances. While Arsenal did boast an impressive defensive record last season, this was partly due to a well-balanced team and a solid midfield presence. The absence of Rice’s influence and Odegaard’s control in midfield could make Arsenal’s defence more vulnerable than Morgan suggests.

On the other hand, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham has shown considerable promise this season. Spurs will be keen to capitalise on any potential weaknesses in Arsenal’s lineup. With a determined squad and home advantage at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs are well-positioned to challenge the Gunners’ defensive claims.

Without a doubt, Arsenal’s defence is among the best in the league and the world. However, each season brings adjustments that can change a team’s dynamics. In Tottenham’s case, the change seems to be for the better, especially considering the injuries affecting Mikel Arteta’s squad. This is another reason not to miss this derby.
