Newcastle United player ratings vs Wolves, Fabian Schar scores on return but 2/10 is awful

Newcastle United overcame a sloppy start to come from behind at Molineux and beat Wolves 2-1.

Eddie Howe‘s side looked rusty and void of ideas after returning from the international break. Newcastle had plenty of possession in the first half but struggled to carve out any real chances.

Wolves took advantage of Newcastle’s poor start and opened the scoring through Mario Lemina after Sean Longstaff gave the ball away.

Howe responded at the break with a triple substitution, and Fabian Schar gave Newcastle the spark of inspiration they needed when his deflected strike from range looped in.

Moments later, substitute Harvey Barnes curled in a superb effort to complete Newcastle’s comeback and send the Magpies up to third in the Premier League table.

Nick Pope – 6

Jamie Carragher rightly pointed out that he looked nervous on the ball. In a game that Newcastle were trying to control, Pope needlessly punted it long when he could have played out calmly. Protected Newcastle’s lead with a huge late save.

Tino Livramento – 4

Newcastle’s entire right-hand side was poor, including Livramento. He looked fearful of taking on his man and his deliveries into the box lacked quality. Replaced by Kieran Trippier just after the hour mark.

Schar has been dearly missed. The big silver lining to Newcastle’s otherwise poor defence. Caught out by a clever dummy for the opener but added to his spectacular showreel of goals with his strike in the second half.

Dan Burn – 4

A clumsy performance. Wasn’t helped by Hall on the left-hand side but was poor defensively and repeatedly lost his man in the box. It’s almost as if Newcastle need a new centre-back.

Lewis Hall – 3

Defensively awful. Was completely missing for Wolves’ opener after bombing forward. Better going forward but needs to improve that side of his game quickly if he is going to be the long-term solution at left-back.

Sean Longstaff – 2

Unforgivably sloppy. Lost the ball which led to Wolves’ opener. Should be dropped from the starting lineup for the trip to Fulham. Howe realised his mistake and rightly hooked him at the break.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6

Controlled the ball well to help Newcastle dominate possession, but looked leggy getting back. Howe needs to monitor his workload after a busy start to the season. However, he never shied away from the ball and led by example in the second half.

Joelinton – 5

Ghosted his way through the first half. Didn’t give the ball away as much as others but was becoming a passenger before he was taken off at half-time.

Jacob Murphy – 4

Missed an early opportunity and struggled to break down a well-organised Wolves defence. Was hardly mentioned at all in the second half with all of Newcastle’s best attacks coming down the left.

Anthony Gordon – 7

Lively but isolated. Nelson Semedo will be having nightmares about him tonight after Gordon skipped past him multiple times early on. Deserved a goal when he hit the post in the first half. However, he struggled to get involved after being asked to play centrally in the second half.

Alexander Isak – 5

Started brightly and held the ball up well but was ultimately starved of chances. Replaced at half-time by Harvey Barnes.

Substitutes

Joe Willock – 7

Almost scored with his first touch. Added some much-needed energy to Newcastle’s press and looked threatening when bursting forward.

Sandro Tonali – 6

After a superb week away with Italy, Howe raised eyebrows by leaving him out. Brought on at half-time to replace Joelinton. Added more stability and control to Newcastle’s midfield and was unlucky not to score late on. He must start against Fulham.

Harvey Barnes – 9

Sent an emphatic message to Eddie Howe that he has to start. He was energetic and active on the left after coming off the bench and he thumped home an incredible strike to give Newcastle the lead. Could have added another in the dying moments.

Kieran Trippier – 5

Where has his ability to take set pieces gone? Much better defensively than Livramento but another who lacked quality going forward.
