Ange Postecoglou refuses to endorse Spurs star for national team selection.
Ange Postecoglou has chosen not to comment on Lee Carsley’s selection decision when asked if one Tottenham man is ready to play for England.
Lack of Tottenham players in England
Tottenham have historically had a lot of representatives in the Three Lions set-up. In fact, no club has produced more England players than Spurs have in their history (Goal).
However, those numbers have fallen considerably over the past few years, with the England squad for the recent Euros not consisting of even a single Tottenham player.
On the back of his impressive start to the season, James Maddison gave himself a good chance of returning to the England set-up, but he seems to have missed out once again (Ornstein).
Solanke receives England call-up
Solanke has hit the ground running since his big-money move to Spurs, impressing with his pressing and link-up play, and also displaying a goalscorer’s instinct.
After scoring three in the last three matches, the striker certainly earned a spot back in the England squad, seven years on from winning his first and only cap for his country all the way back in November 2017.
However, Postecoglou refused to comment on Carsley’s selection decisions earlier this week.
When asked if Solanke is ready to play for England, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “Yeah there are no issues around him from a physical perspective. I get enough stick for my own selections, mate so I am not going to get involved in anyone else’s selections, but yeah Dom is fine.”
Door open for Solanke
One would expect Ivan Toney to struggle to make it back into the England squad following his decision to move to Saudi Arabia.
That potentially opens the door for Solanke to be Harry Kane’s main backup, although Ollie Watkins is currently ahead of the Spurs man in that particular pecking order.
One can argue that Solanke is the most like-for-like replacement England have for Kane, given the 26-year-old’s link-up play, his physical presence and his ability to get on the end of crosses.
Hopefully, he gets a chance to impress on the pitch during the upcoming internationals, but even getting a call-up after seven years away will be a huge deal for the striker.
