Ange Postecoglou is expected to remain in charge of Tottenham this summer even if he is approached by big-name clubs. Despite arriving from Celtic in the summer amid much scepticism, the Australian boss has adhered himself to fans in north London with his attacking brand of football, and Saturday’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace kept Spurs in the hunt for a top-four finish.
Inevitably though, that has led to the former Celtic man being linked with a move elsewhere. And a report in The Independent claimed that ‘three wealthier clubs’ could decide to approach the 58-year-old, with the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich all set to appoint new managers in the summer.
But it seems that football fans don’t believe he is going anywhere. A poll in the Express asked readers if Postecoglou was likely to have ‘his head turned by managerial offers from other clubs’, with the majority believing he is committed to his project at Tottenham.
Overall, 57 per cent of the respondents believe Postecoglou won’t be leaving Spurs for another club if he receives an offer in the near future. There were 43 per cent though, who believe that he is likely to be interested if a wealthier club comes in for him.
Postecoglou arrived at Tottenham after two years in Scotland, where he led Celtic to five domestic trophies. His final season culminated in a league and cup double, prompting Daniel Levy to offer hm a four-year deal.
And in January, he insisted he was committed to his current club long-term, adding that criticism did not influence him. “There’s always challenges,” he replied, having been pressed on why Spurs had not been able to maintain their early-season form.
“There isn’t a manager, irrespective of where they are…..even the ones who are on top still get criticised for something they do. It’s part of your existence as a manager, you need to embrace that and understand that. The test then becomes when people are calling for you to change something.”
Postecoglou would have been left relieved after Tottenham’s fightback against Palace, with his side trailing 0-1 with just 13 minutes remaining. But a first club goal for Timo Werner levelled matters, before Cristian Romero struck three minutes later.
Captain Son Heung-Min completed the win late on, temporarily moving Tottenham to within two points of fourth-placed Aston Villa. But the Midlands club beat Luton 3-2 later in the evening to extend the gap back to five.
